The New Yorker Article 3

Leap of faith

This article talks about the rise of Michele Bachmann from a avid Tea Party Insurgent to a Republican contender in the 2012 Presidential race. Bachmann is a 2 term member of Congress and is supportive of the Christian-conservative movement. She has rapidly risen in the polls which is based on her collection of right-wing convictions, resentments and beliefs that she's broad-casted since 2006. She also has a way of saying something offensive or super outrageous and then looks back on it with a cheerful and carefree remark of explaining it.

The whole point of this article is to show how Bachmann is part of a generation of Christian conservatives whose views are much different from most secular Americans and even a lot of Christan's. Her campaign uses a set of beliefs differing greatly and more extreme than another other American politician she is compared to.

This is a pretty interesting article about a remarkable women changing party's. From a radical Tea Party to a conservative Christian Republican, this article really shows you the changes in todays society. The author uses plenty of syntax, tone, figures of speech (sentence structure in that) as well as connotations and mood. They use a narrative technique like POV, voice, order of events following her campaign and changes as well as frame story, dialogue and formal diction. The rhetorical structure is more descriptive than anything.

The New Yorker Article 2

England's Riots: Trainers

This article is about the recent riots in England. The author talks about how we watch with horror and a certain amount of interest as these people break windows and destroy closed stores. Its ferocious and scary and your glad your not there. However there are many bystanders even in England. The police can't control the situation as the young try to outdo one another. They take what they like and keep the loot. Their role is to consume and its more of a point to show that adults cant do anything which is supposed to keep a check on them.

These people in England are rioting both out of concern of what has happened in recent times but also partly to shock the older generations and show them that we, the young population have a voice of our own. They break open stores and take goods such as Trainers (Sneakers) of which very few are produced in England, more like sweatshops in Asia and they pick up the pieces of a crumbling economy and throw the harassed political authority in further disarray.

Its all to really prove a point which is also what the author of this article is doing because the people of England want things to change which in reality, arent changing at all. This article also uses foreshadowing, allegory, tone, imagery and syntax as well as basic sentence structure and figures of speech. It uses POV as well as informal diction. It has a narration sot of rhetorical structure.

The New Yorker Article 1

Ask The Author Live: John Cassidy on the Debt Crisis

In this article, John Cassidy, instead of writing the traditional article and argues or debates something, answers questions about the recent stock market plummets and the debt crisis. I picked this article because I feel that its important to cover the most recent news about our economy at the moment because it will ultimately affect us all whether we feel it or not.

The first question is about where our money goes if its wiped from the market. John answers that of course when you get stocks, you give up money for paper which is a stock certificate but if the stocks are worthless, than you really are just holding paper. As long as the market stays up however, its still worth money. So no one got the money except for a few select few that expected the market to fall.

Another is asking whether low interest is good or bad. He says it won't make a difference. Its already expected to stay low.

One asks  whether he thinks that if the US Gov. tries to reduce deficit rather than creating jobs, whether the result will be a double recession. John says that in the long term, they will need to take long term debt protection. It will most likely not be an easy road but its still all the necessary.

This article is pretty interesting and effective because it shows us the modern day economy and shows us what to do. It uses imagery, repetition, mood, etc. This is especially using point of view, dialogue and some foreshadowing. It is a Exposition type of article.
